This is my supercool 1997 TJ Wrangler. It's the funk bomb. They say every man should restore an american car in his lifetime. It's my time, but I'm keeping it in perspective, this isn't an antique, it's not a muscle car, it's not what you'd normally consider needing restoring. It's a 1997 Jeep in fairly decent shape to begin with, as far as offroad vehicles go.

My plan is to work on it over the spring and summer and this page will have the photos from start to finish. So enjoy.

It took me over six months to find the Jeep I wanted, a white one in decent shape, hard top, BFG MTs (well one way or another they were going on it), decent mileage and price. Price is not ever cheap on these, they retain their value! I saw a Kia the other day half as old as this, for just a little more than 1/5 the Jeep's price. That's right, the Jeep's older and cost almost 5 times as much. Cheap foreign junk.

So let's take a look at what I've got. These are the images of the Jeep when I brought it home. It looks pretty nice since the pics are taken with a DSLR and they are small for the web. But it's not quite as nice as it looks here.

What's wrong? First off, when I test drove it, the driver's side door could not be opened from inside the vehicle. You have to roll the window down and use the outside handle to open it. I told them to fix it. When I came back to pick it up, "Hello, Mr. Rose, your Jeep is fixed and ready to go." It was still broken when I got home. How lame.

The inside is pretty hosed. The seats are ripped up, the carpet is toast, the steering wheel is ripped open and it's full of dog hair. The suspension is a little bouncy, there's a bad spring or shock in the back. The Jeep needs lifted as the tires rub the frame. The back tire cover is ripped open and the tire is too small to really be a spare. It had a Sony tape deck in it that was dead.

The window tint looks good in the pics, but it's bubbled and ripped up. It's got to come off or get replaced. Rocks have smashed the headlights, one won't work, one has a hole in it with water and I'm amazed it's working for now. Wiper blades are rotted, some parts falling off the arms. So, that's the obvious stuff.

Take a look and then Page 2 has the initial tearing in.
