OLD SCHOOL Model Rockets

This is old school stuff -- we are flying back 20 years!! Here's a few photos I found in the album of some of my early space exploration attempts.

August 1983

That's me on the left in the stylin' green and my cousin Chris on the right. We are at the Pineville High School football field in the middle of nowhere West Virginia. That's not far from Coalwood for those of you familiar with October Sky/Rocket Boys story.

Chris had built his first rocket with me while visiting from Texas. I built an Estes Maverick and I can't remember the kit Chris built, but you can see it in the pic below. (If any one can name it, let me know)

This is my Dad -- Harold Rose. He's the reason I fly rockets. He bought me an Alpha III starter kit for Christmas one year and the rest is history as they say.

That's Chris's gem my dad is getting ready to launch. If memory serves, we weren't allowed to fly them ourselves as my dad's sister (Chris's grandmother) is paranoid and afraid we would kill ourselves. Actually she was always afraid we were going to kill ourselves. We weren't allowed to do anything when we stayed in Pineville. (We did, we just lied and did things without asking. That's what being overly protective of your kids will get you.)

I flew my Maverick that day and watched it land on top of the high school. No one there -- it's summer. Actually got the rocket back a few weeks later, but the rain and sun had destroyed it. Oh well, time to build another one.


July 1984
Here is my collection at the time -- I can't name them all. That's what the years do to a person. From left, don't know, don't know, blue thing?? don't know, Honest John in the back, my awesome Estes Sprint with the yellow balsa nose. That rocket would fly -- 1600' Estes claims. I know I flew it all the way across the Kanawha river from Fort Hill to Magic Island when I was in high school. Twice actually. Don't know, Sat. 5 in progress and an Estes Wizard.

I think the globe set, planes and flag just make this one great photo. Plus, you can see me as a fat kid in the mirror. That just rocks!

August 1984
Here is my Estes Honest John and another unidentified kit at Joplin Park in S. Charleston WV. I carried all this about a half mile to the park to fly. The Honest John was a great little kit. It was really cool looking after I painted it olive drab and put the decals on. I wish Estes still made them, I'd pick one up for sure.

This is an impressive photo. It's called being talented. I was alone the day I flew this... let's see, I would have been 12 and I managed to launch the rocket and snap off this photo on my little Disc camera. Anyone remember the Kodak Disc cameras? They are LONG gone now. That's like asking the kid at the record store where the long playing records are.
