WVSU Yellow Jacket — Black History Month and the strangeness of the new world
By Sean Rose
It certainly seems that strange days are upon us.
With the past election over, America is divided. There is no unity, no call for patriotism. We have a president made, not elected, and a country at odds over freedom and morality.
It’s also a strange time because it’s Black History Month and the powers that be just performed the biggest setback in civil rights that I can remember... by casting out thousands of black votes and taking away their right to choose.
“For a free country, you sure do have alot of rules.”
It’s obvious to me now that blacks in America are not treated equally and that their voice and opinion mean nothing.
Can America not care about its black population? You bet.
Some years back when I was living in Louisiana a story was passed on to me by a friend who had witnessed a black man being shot by a police officer. As the story goes, the man was running down the street and the cop was chasing him... why we don’t know, but apparently the police officer just decided he wasn’t going to chase him anymore and he shot the black man. Mid afternoon, downtown Baton Rouge.
Well, since you just can’t shoot a man because you’re angry you can’t catch him, the police did a little crime scene rearrangement. They left the man in the street bleeding for over an hour while a television set and a pistol were brought in by fellow officers. As they told it, he was stealing the television and pulled his weapon after the chase. So the policeman shot him. Crime solved, streets are safe. Mid afternoon, downtown Baton Rouge.
Well, it doesn’t take a smart man to figure that you can’t run carrying a TV. Also, the said weapon was a big, long 6 shooter revolver something my friend said looked like “it was out of the wild west.” Well, it doesn’t take a smart man to realize that’s not a gang banging 9mm some punk kid would be carrying around these days anyway. But none of that is the strange part.
My friend was shocked. He called the police department and told them what happened. He called the news crews. No one cared. Everything was being taken care of. End of story.
So that’s a black man equals nothing in America proof. I am sure there are more stories like that and that is a sad situation.
I am not black. So I can’t imagine what that would feel like. I know one thing though, a man with nothing to lose is dangerous and if I had my rights stripped away while others flaunted them everyday, I would be very, very angry.
I am an american artist.
