The future of music media is here

By Sean Rose

If you haven’t jumped on the DVD bandwagon yet so you can check out blockbusters like "The Matrix" and "The Sixth Sense", you have another very good reason to consider it. Music.

Many entertainers are making their video collections and live concerts available. If you are like me, you hate paying $20 for a CD when blank CDs at Star Mart cost less than $0.70 apiece.

This past weekend I picked up Sarah McLachlan’s "1989-1998 Video Collection" and her live concert "Mirrorball" for $15.99. That’s for both DVDs. Mirrorball alone on audio CD costs more. This way you get three hours of high-definition video to go along with the music.

Sarah is not alone in this section of the store either. You can pick up Dave Matthew’s "Listener Supported" for $2 more than the CD and you’ll get to see the whole show. Madonna’s many video DVDs are all about $20, just a couple dollars more than any of the companion audio CDs.

While all those pretty shots of Sarah are nice, you are also getting the music in a superior format. Audio CDs store information at 44.1Khz sampling rate and a data rate of 150KB/s. Sarah’s DVDs audio tracks are in Dolby AC-3 format with a 48Khz sampling rate and a 384KB/s data rate. Bigger is better here, and the sound iswonderful. Plus DVD has the ability to mix the audio for surround sound systems and regular stereos on one disc.

So, take a look at audio DVD. After all, you are getting full, live motion video and you can always burn that high quality audio to MiniDisc, CD, cassette or MP3 if you want to hear it on the go.
