WVSU Yellow Jacket — Being a Generation X player and the big bad 'N' word
By Sean Rose
Summer break is over and it’s back to the grind. This leaves us with the important task of finding something interesting to write about. That’s not always an easy task, and it’s something I’m quite certain The Yellow Jacket staff has not been doing a good job of recently.
In doing an investigative piece, a "WVSC employee" told me they did not know what The Yellow Jacket was. This person most definitely should have known. But it rang in my head that this person isn’t stupid, they are just ignorant and that’s our fault.
It seems that people only read the paper when we write something off the wall and controversial. OK. Been there and done that. But do we have to resort to that to get people to read? Why do I feel I should use profanity and continue to press buttons with race relations on campus?
Well, call me lackluster and unimaginative, but this week I can only think of two things to write about. One is my friend’s request that I create a website called "How to be a Generation X player," since he thinks I am one and it would help him get laid. The other is using the word "nigger" in this column to advertise for a strong black voice that’s needed on The Yellow Jacket staff.
Hmm, not great topics seeing as my player days were based on times past when I had my own place, elicit substances (yes, ELICIT as in bring out - like bring out the slut in the alternachicks) and a plethora of sleazy alternachicks to choose from. Something’s different these days, and quitting your fat cash job and living with your folks while you go back to school doesn’t exactly make me the player type. So, that’s all on that subject. Not that I’m not open for any girlie interaction - I’m single so send pictures and love letters to srose@cycline3.com.
Second, we have the bad "N" word. It’s a terrible word. But I keep seeing it in a bold print that says to me "write it and they will read." So, I have to.
I think the word "Nigger" is the most derogatory term in the English language. I can’t think of anything worse, which makes me wonder why people use it. I can see someone racist using it. It’s meant to demean and make that person feel superior. But why do blacks use it? I hear blacks use it everyday when I am walking across campus, and it always makes me shake my head in wonder.
Fact is, by using that term, these black individuals are doing the work of the racists and segregationists. Anyone who uses the word is expressing a deep lack of self-esteem and a lack of respect for the person they are saying it to. People who hear someone use that word automatically looks down on that person. You scare other people by saying it. All of which effectively separates blacks and whites. The racists win.
I wish I would never hear the word again, and I wish people would stop classifying each other, but that’s not going to happen and I’ll deal. In the meantime, I wish we had a new voice on the paper that could represent the black community we have here at WVSC. Staff meetings are at 12:30 p.m. every Tuesday in the Wilson College Union - Room 105. I’ll see you there.
