WVSU Yellow Jacket — Was Jesus black?
By Sean Rose
Jesus was a black cowboy.
In my heart, anyway. I can see him riding the range twirling the ol’ six shooters at the big bad looking guys in the black hats. I even see the Duke nod his head out of respect after the gunfire dies down and the smoke clears.
The letter to the editor my brother wrote has sparked some controversial dialogue in The Yellow Jacket office. It seems that some people are afraid to think that Jesus isn’t white with a long flowing hippie beard.
I for one don’t really care what Jesus looked like, after all, as a religious leader/icon/deity/whatever you choose to call him; I doubt that his main concern was whether or not people would know what he looked like.
Does it really matter to you? If so, I ask you to take a deep introspective look at your faith. I question your ability to have a spiritual sense at all if you are concerned with such immoral thoughts as judging based on race.
There’s nothing wrong with the people who think Jesus was black. I can’t believe there are staff members who argue about this. Like they are the only opinion that matters and all the people of the world who think different things are just plain wrong.
Well, they should wake up. This is a higher learning institution. When you came to West Virginia State College, you made a commitment to better yourself. Not just by learning to find the definite integral of some fancy equation, but to be able to interact and work in a diverse environment.
That means you have to be tolerant of other people’s views. In turn, they can be tolerant of yours. Many people think that I can be quite confrontational. I am strong willed and outspoken. But the chances are if I am slamming someone, there is a very good reason. More than likely, they have overstepped their boundaries and forgot that they are 1 out of 6 billion people on Earth, thus making whatever they say certainly not law, and more than likely, not relevant to the population as a whole at all.
In the vernacular tongue, people think that whatever they believe is the way everyone should believe and if they don’t, the other person is wrong.
Come on people!! Eyes and ears open this time! SIX BILLION PEOPLE! Everyone is entitled to his or her beliefs. Respect them! There is no book that defines the laws of the world. No giant talking Joshua tree that speaks mystical prose about the will of the powers that be.
If you are going to say ‘The Bible’ is that magic book, I can assure you that is NOT the case. Do not assume I, or anyone else, share your religious beliefs. Don’t infringe on my rights to believe as I wish, and I will not infringe on yours.
Enough ranting from the dark hearted genius, just remember that other people are not idiots because they don’t think the way you do. You can do yourself and everyone else a big favor by stepping outside of your own views and trying to see things from another person’s view. You will learn more about yourself, and you just might realize you were the one that was wrong all along.
